The Outeniqua Hiking Trail

WILDERNESS, GARDEN ROUTE, SOUTH AFRICA
Distance: 108 km.
Length: 8 days.
Terrain: Mountains (non technical), Forest, Plantations.
Difficulty: 7 out of 10 due to time on foot.
Max group size: 24 people.

BRIEF OVERVIEW

The trail is one of the toughest multi-day trails in South Africa because of the time spent on your feet, an average of 16 km per day.

Although some sections will take you across the Outeniqua Mountains, there are no technical sections where you will need rope or mountaineering equipment.

The trail is well marked with footprints pointing in the direction that you must follow. On the last few days these footprints also contain distance in kilometers travelled. Sanparks will post you a map prior to the start. Make sure you receive this and familiarise yourself with the route.

There are overnight huts at each stop. There are flushing toilets and 3 of the 8 huts have hot water. All have covered braai/BBQ areas with wood and an axe.

Rainwater tanks provide drinking water at the huts. If you are wary, rather use water purification tablets. You can fill up from the many smaller river crossings en route. Cell phone signal along the way is patchy.

The trail has some wonderful mountain views and amazing forest sections, which entail around 65% of the trail.

Use the menu on the right to find out what each day has in store for you.
