The Otter Hiking Trail
Av Hiking Time: 5.5 - 6 hours.
Highlights: Skilderkrans views and Bloubaai beach.
Be prepared for: Steep hills - lots of them.
Day 2 of the Otter Trail is probably the most varied day of the hike (and one of the toughest).
Forest, vynbos, views for whale and dolphin spotting, tough climbs, the Skilderkrans Quartz Promontory, and of course the bloubaai beach are just some of the things you pass through.
Just make sure you don't miss the turn off for Bloubaai beach. It is slightly off the trail but a great place for lunch. If you find yourself climbing a never ending hill then you have more than likely missed it (the turnoff is at the start of the major climb of the day - Once you reach the viewpoint at the top of the climb, you will be able to see the beach, but few are tempted to go back down the mountain...)
Scott Hut is situated on the Geelhoutbos River Mouth, a really beautiful setting.
Tips for Day 2:
- Frozen meat wrapped up in your sleeping bag with probably stay fresh so why not enjoy a little meat at the end of one of the toughest days on the hike.
- The map shows an incorrect turnoff to Bloubaai beach - explore a little way into any paths that branch off the trail in the general vicinty of the beach (just before your major climb).
- Explore up river at Scott Hut. (There is also a very small tidal beach on the opposite side of the mouth - but be warned - the tides can change quickly!)
