The Outeniqua Hiking Trail
Av Hiking Time: 6 hours.
Highlights: Beautiful Jubilee Creek walk. Hot showers!
Be prepared for: A steep uphill with no shade just after Jubilee Creek.
NB: The time it takes to walk this route as indicated on the old Sanparks map is wrong. The day will take around 5 hours and not 7 hours as indicated on the old map.
The day starts with an easy flat and downhill hike in the forest. The path is wide (much better than day before) and turns into a jeep track. This leads down to a beautiful rope river crossing, where you will get your feet wet, so make sure you keep your water shoes close at hand.
The river crossing is followed by a steep uphill, onto more jeep track before the beautiful Jubilee Creek walk. You may run into other day travellers, as this is a favourite spot for picnickers.
Jubilee has a history of gold and you will see remnants of mines and miners along the trail. There is an opportunity to swim at the waterfall just before your final ascent. If you get to this point at midday, take the time to swim first and let the midday heat pass, as the next ascent is in full sun, long and hot.
Don’t miss a stop at Mother Holly's Coffee Shop, once you reach the top. This is only 50 m from Millwood Hut and has delicious burgers! Mother Holly's also has a small, very interesting museum. Molly’s may be closed on Mondays and is open til 4pm.
Short walk to your hut and hot showers! Cabin has no electricity but showers do!
Tips for Day 4:
- Keep your swimming costume close at hand and swim at Jubilee Creek waterfall.
- This is a relatively easy day, so use it to recover from the previous day.
- Make sure you have cash for a burger, in case the restaurant is open.
